Jackson was captured as an infant in the Burma Delta in 1884 and acquired by the Calcutta Zoological Gardens. In 1886 he was transferred to London Zoo at Regents Park. At this time he was only the second hairy-eared Sumatran rhinoceros to have arrived in the United Kingdom. He lived in London Zoo until 1910, when he died. Following his death his body was treated by taxidermists and he was displayed in Bristol Museum, surviving the building’s bombing in the Second World War. During the colonial period, rhinos went from being a populous species in the mid-nineteenth century, to an endangered animal by the early-twentieth century. This was largely because of hunting and the destruction of their habitat.
